Oconee County, Georgia, Marriages 1875 – 1920

A COGS project led by Mary Hoit Abbe. This 198 page hardback book lists over 4000 marriages that took place in Oconee County from February of 1875, when the county was founded, through 1920. The marriages are indexed alphabetically by the surnames of both the grooms and the brides. Since many of these people were, at their birth, residents of Clarke County and descendants of earlier residents of Clarke County, these marriage records should be of use to many Clarke County researchers as well as those researching in Oconee County. Furthermore, people of color were so noted on the licenses and this information has been included in the book.

Greene County, Georgia, Tax Digests Pre-1800

Abstracted by Mary Hoit Abbe and Elaine Collier Neal. Includes a full name index.
These early tax digests provide the most information on the settlers of Greene County, Georgia, for the first years of the county’s history. This volume comprises the tax returns for the years 1788, 1789, 1793, 1796, 1797, 1798, and 1799. These are all the years that are extant through 1800 and are a substitute for the lost federal population censuses 1790 through 1810.

These complete abstractions of the microfilm include all data in the digests. To make the series of years more consistent and easier to read, the abstractors had to reorder some of the columns in some years. The data includes NAME of the taxpayer, agent, or estate; poll; quality and quantity of real estate and its location; number of slaves; and the amount of tax. Some years include the number of males 21 and older, number of slaves less than 60, name of whom the property adjoins, name to whom the land was granted, names of defaulters, and names of males who paid a poll but had no property.
