Militia Districts for Clarke and Oconee Counties
The fourteen numbers originally assigned to Clarke County were 216, 217, 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 239, 240, 241, and 261. Even though the numbers were known, they were rarely used consistently until the early 1850s. Prior to that, the district was designated by the captain’s name; and since the captain was elected annually, the name of the district changed frequently. Because Clarke County has tax digests surviving for most years, it is possible to identify the districts by the correct number. (The identification of all the districts 1802-1852 by their number is a long-term project.)
A transcription of the Clarke County, Georgia Tax Digests 1811-1820, 1821-1830, and 1847-1850 are currently available for purchase through COGS.
