Let’s help index the 1950 U.S. Census together! Sign up for our hands-on 1950 Census Indexing Marathon which will be held in the 2nd floor computer lab at the Athens – Clarke County Library on Baxter Street in Athens, GA. A volunteer will be available to provide assistance.

We would love to have you join us in this nationwide community effort to help make 1950 Census images searchable for free on FamilySearch.org! Together, we will review and improve an automated index created by Ancestry using handwriting recognition technology.

There are 4 two-hour time slots available on Saturday, May 21 and 5 two-hour time slots available on Wednesday, May 25. Ten people at a time can volunteer for each time slot, and you may volunteer for multiple time slots. This in-person event is free and open to the public. Reserve your seat by using the link below.

Helpful Tips:

1950 Census Index Review is underway at FamilySearch.org! As the Community Project census images are released for review, volunteers can select from a list or map of available states and select Review Names, Review Families, or Review Document Header to verify spelling and other information in the computer-generated index of the 1950 U.S. Census.

Before reviewing the computer-generated index for the first time, it is very helpful to read the FAQs, especially the section on Reviewing the Index which includes:

As you work on reviewing the index, you can click the ? at the top of the page to search for additional guidance when you have a question.

After reviewing the FAQ’s, start with Name Review to get a feel of how index review works and what the census pages look like.

Make sure you are signed in to your free FamilySearch account. The direct link to the 1950 Census indexing page is https://www.familysearch.org/getinvolved/1950. You can view your individual statistics beneath the map on this page. Group statistics are being kept and are expected to be visible soon. If you are a COGS member, please join our 1950 Census indexing group at FamilySearch. (The link to join was sent via email to all COGS members.) By joining, you will help our society receive recognition for volunteering in the 1950 U.S. Census Community Project for FamilySearch.
